The KCARC ARES/RACES group aims to support our community with amateur radio communications in emergencies.

In an emergency, we are activated by the Director of Public Safety or his/her deputy.  Most commonly we are tasked with providing backup communications for shelters opened by the American Red Cross.  However, we can't predict where we'll be needed in advance, so we try to be prepared for anything.

We keep ourselves in practice in several ways:

  • Supporting community events such as parades, fairs and sporting events
  • Conducting our own weekly net, Saturdays at 0900 local on 146.970(-) PL 77.0
  • Participating in emergency preparedness drills, for example the simulated radiological emergency drill.
  • Holding Field Day events to practice operating in different conditions.

The ARES/RACES group holds monthly meetings, usually on the last Monday of every month.  Meeting information can be found on our club front page.  Anyone interested in emergency communications is welcome at our meetings.
